It is not stubbornness: aging dulls the taste buds, so it takes more salt to taste anything at all. But the salt that restores their sense of flavor also pushes sodium intake past what a healthy body can handle — and excess sodium is one of the main dietary drivers of high blood pressure.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">There is a fix that takes no willpower, no new diet, no bitter pills: \u003Cstrong>switch the salt in their kitchen\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">\u003Cstrong>What low-sodium salt actually is\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Low-sodium salt is also called potassium-enriched salt. The recipe is simple: replace part of the sodium chloride in ordinary salt with potassium chloride.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">[TABLE: salt-swap-composition]\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">\u003Cimg src=\"\u002Fattachment\u002F20261010\u002Fcff424e3e2af4e40be02eeca201e269d.webp\" alt=\"img_01.webp\">\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">The swap does two things at once. You eat less sodium — the mineral that raises blood pressure. And you get more potassium — the mineral most people do not eat enough of, the one that helps keep blood pressure down.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">\u003Cstrong>The numbers from a 21,000-person trial\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">The strongest evidence comes from a large randomized trial. Researchers enrolled 21,000 people who either had a history of stroke, or were over 60 with high blood pressure that was not under control. Anyone taking medicines that affect potassium excretion, using potassium supplements, or with severe kidney disease was excluded.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Half the villages switched to low-sodium salt; the other half kept regular salt.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">The results, compared with the regular-salt group:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Stroke risk dropped \u003Cstrong>14%\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Major cardiovascular events (stroke plus heart attack combined) dropped \u003Cstrong>13%\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Risk of premature death dropped \u003Cstrong>12%\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Even the trial's design stacked the deck against the salt: participants were not told to limit how much they used, and were given an average of 20 grams a day — while the average Chinese adult uses only about 11 grams. Eat as salty as you like, and the benefit still held.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">\u003Cimg src=\"\u002Fattachment\u002F20261010\u002Fb47f48c7786244a39e7ac85b4bd13f92.webp\" alt=\"img_02.webp\">\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">\u003Cstrong>Is it safe? Yes — for most people\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Low-sodium salt was invented precisely to lower blood pressure, and its safety record is part of why the swap works as a population strategy.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Hyperkalemia (too much potassium in the blood) occurred in about \u003Cstrong>2%\u003C\u002Fstrong> of people — and the rate was nearly the same in both the low-sodium and regular-salt groups.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Deaths linked to hyperkalemia were \u003Cstrong>not higher\u003C\u002Fstrong> in the low-sodium group.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">The trial used a formula with 25% potassium chloride. Current evidence says that as long as potassium chloride stays at or below \u003Cstrong>30%\u003C\u002Fstrong>, most people can use it without trouble.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">\u003Cstrong>Who the guidelines recommend it for\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">The 2024 Chinese guidelines on low-sodium salt promotion (published in the Chinese Journal of Preventive Medicine) recommend replacing regular salt with low-sodium salt for:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">People with \u003Cstrong>high blood pressure\u003C\u002Fstrong> — whether or not they take medication. Clear blood-pressure-lowering effect, plus fewer cardiovascular events and deaths.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">People at \u003Cstrong>high cardiovascular risk\u003C\u002Fstrong>: a history of stroke, coronary heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, or a 10-year cardiovascular risk of 10% or higher.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">\u003Cstrong>Middle-aged and older adults\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Healthy people with \u003Cstrong>normal blood pressure\u003C\u002Fstrong> — it lowers blood pressure, cuts new-onset hypertension, and does not cause low blood pressure.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">\u003Cstrong>Who must ask a doctor first\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Low-sodium salt is not for everyone. A small minority should check with a doctor before switching:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">\u003Cstrong>Kidney problems\u003C\u002Fstrong>: an abnormal glomerular filtration rate or urine protein test, or diagnosed chronic kidney disease. Be especially careful if eGFR is below 60 mL\u002F(min·1.73 m²) or urine protein is positive. The kidney is the organ that removes excess potassium — when it is impaired, the extra potassium has nowhere to go.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">\u003Cstrong>People on medicines that block potassium excretion\u003C\u002Fstrong> — especially the RAAS inhibitors (ACE inhibitors like \"pril\" drugs, ARBs like \"sartan\" drugs, and aliskiren) commonly used for high blood pressure and heart failure. If you are not on a RAAS inhibitor, ordinary blood-pressure or heart-failure drugs are usually fine.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Unless you have severe kidney disease or take a drug that clearly blocks potassium excretion, low-sodium salt is safe for you — and it prevents hypertension.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">\u003Cstrong>Buying rule: keep potassium chloride at or below 30%\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">Low-sodium salt is sold in most supermarkets and online. When buying, check the ingredient list and choose a product whose potassium chloride content is \u003Cstrong>no higher than 30%\u003C\u002Fstrong>.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">\u003Cstrong>Small tools that make salt control automatic\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">The current Chinese Dietary Guidelines cap salt at \u003Cstrong>5 grams a day\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Most people have no idea how much they actually use. Three tools fix that:\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">\u003Cstrong>2-gram salt spoon\u003C\u002Fstrong>: one level spoon holds 2 grams. A healthy adult gets a daily budget of about three spoons. If ingredients already contain salt — soy sauce, MSG, chicken bouillon — deduct from the budget.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Cp style=\"margin:0 0 18px;\">\u003Cstrong>Electronic salt spoon\u003C\u002Fstrong>: measures not just salt weight but soy sauce volume.
