The answer from a urologist at Mount Sinai's Icahn School of Medicine is a firm no, and the direction is exactly backwards. Dialysis is not a deep clean for the body. It is a rough artificial membrane standing in for kidneys that have already failed — and the rough substitute makes the part of the kidney still doing its job stop sooner.

Why the Machine Can't Copy the Kidney

A hemodialysis machine is a bundle of hollow fibers, and the fiber walls are full of tiny pores. Whether a waste molecule gets cleared comes down to two things: whether it is small enough, and whether it is free in the blood. The glomerulus filters plasma first, and size matters there too — but the deciding step is the tubule. The leading hypotheses: dialysis repeatedly swings blood volume and osmotic pressure, so kidney perfusion fluctuates — one 2025 ultrasound study measured kidney perfusion dropping about 17.5% during a single session; or solute concentrations are pressed so low that tubules lose their working load. Some nephrologists borrow the ventilator-induced-lung-injury analogy and ask whether dialysis itself can injure a kidney, in the same way a breathing machine can injure a lung.
